When your dentist is planning your Invisalign treatment, they map out a predicted progression of your teeth’s movements. In many cases, everything goes according to plan. In some instances, though, refinements are necessary. What exactly are Invisalign refinements, and how do they work? This blog post explains what you should know.
What Are Invisalign Refinements?
Invisalign refinements are adjustments to your treatment plan that your dentist may suggest during the course of your Invisalign journey. These refinements are additional sets of aligners that are designed to address any deviations from the original treatment plan. Refinements help to make sure that your final results are as close to perfect as possible.
Refinements become necessary when your teeth do not align with the originally projected movements. There are several reasons why this might happen. It might be due to the complexity of your dental issues, variations in how your teeth respond to the aligners (some teeth tend to be stubborn), or a lack of compliance with wearing the aligners as prescribed. Regardless of the reason, refinements can play a key role in your treatment’s ultimate success.
What to Expect with Invisalign Refinements
The Invisalign refinement process can take a bit of time. It begins with a reassessment of your progress. Your dentist will evaluate how your teeth have moved in relation to the original treatment plan so they can determine whether refinements are necessary.
Once your dentist has a clear understanding of how your teeth have shifted, they will create a new treatment plan. This plan will outline the necessary adjustments and the number of additional aligners required. The new aligners will be custom-made to continue moving your teeth toward their final positions.
You can expect the process to be similar to your initial Invisalign treatment. You will receive the new sets of aligners and will need to wear them for at least 20 – 22 hours each day, usually for about two weeks each.
During the refinement process, you should attend all recommended follow-up appointments with your dentist so they can continue to monitor your progress.
Invisalign refinements might seem like a bummer because they can extend your overall treatment timeline. However, there is reason to be grateful for them. They can make sure that you achieve your ideal smile!
