A Sticky Situation: How to Clear Something Between Your Teeth Safely

Patient flossing between their teeth to avoid dental emergency

Picture this: you’re enjoying a family movie night, munching on popcorn, when all of a sudden you feel a kernel slip between your teeth. Sometimes this is annoying, but this time, it’s starting to hurt, and you can’t seem to get it out! This is a low-level dental emergency, but it’s important to stay calm and use the right tools and techniques. Here’s what you should do when you find yourself dealing with a painful object between your teeth.

Floss Gently

Flossing is the safest and most effective first step. Slide the floss gently between your teeth and move it up and down to loosen the object. Avoid pushing the floss into your gumline or making any circular movements, as this can make the issue worse. If one type of floss doesn’t work, try a different style, like waxed floss or a floss pick. However, regardless of the tool, keep your movements slow and controlled.

Rinse with Warm Water

If flossing alone doesn’t do the trick, rinse your mouth with warm water. Swishing vigorously can help dislodge small particles and soothe irritated tissue. You can repeat this step as many times as you need until you find success. If your gums are swollen or sore, you can add a couple of teaspoons of salt to the water for relief.

Avoid Using Sharp Objects

Many times, the first instinct is to grab a toothpick, a fork, or use your fingernail to try to dig the object out. However, you should avoid doing this if at all possible. These tools can cut your gums, chip your teeth, or push the object deeper into your gumline.

Watch for Signs of Trouble

If your gums become very swollen, painful, or start bleeding heavily, the stuck object may have caused an injury. If the pain is persistent, it’s a sign you should call your dentist. Even if you do manage to remove the object, there could be lingering trauma caused by a cut, puncture, or debris trapped below your gumline.

Your dentist can examine your mouth and use specialized instruments to remove the obstruction before the issue gets worse. It’s always better to ask for professional help than continue to risk damaging your teeth or gums.

Most objects stuck between teeth come out easily with the right tools and techniques. However, when you’ve exhausted your options, or even if you feel unsure, your dentist is only a call away.
